Robert Hines "Shine" McFarland

1913 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
Robert Hines "Shine" McFarland entered heaven Sunday, February 21, 2010, following a short illness.
Shine was born November 8, 1913. He had been enjoying living independently in Tucumcari, NM, caring for his bride of 63 years, the former Elsie Slaugh.
His greatest pleasure in his retirement years was keeping up with his many frineds, neighbors, and extended family members. He remained very interested in the cattle business and the running of the family ranch at Norton, NM. Shine moved from his birth place in Bell County, TX, with his family to the Friona area in 1925. He graduated from the Friona High School in 1931 after playing on the football and basketball teams, singing in the school choir, and playing saxophone with the band.
In 1942, he joined the United States Marine Corps 6th Marine Regiment. He served in the Pacific Theater in WW II seeing action in Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Sasipan, Betio and Tinian. He was wounded twice and contracted dengue fever as well as malaria. He carried permanent reminders of those days with shrapanel in his back and eventually lessening malarial sympotoms.
Following the war, he returned to Friona and married his younger sister Charlene's roommate, Elsie. They worked the family farm at Friona until moving to Norton, NM, in 1949 to the established ranch by Elsie's parents. Shine and Elsie reared their famiy there which grew into Kelly, Sarah, and Mary. Shine joined the Masonic Lodge in 1946 and became a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a Deacon at Trinity Baptist Church where he was a member for 60 years. Shine also recieved an award for his soil conservation efforts.
He is survived by his Elsie; children, Kelly McFarland and Yvette, Sara Wilson, and Mike and Mary Madera and Adrian. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Keldon and Suzette McFarland, Marcus and Amanda, Scott and Russell Hines, Wilson, Sonja, and Rachonne Madera and great granddaughter, Elizabeth Wilson. He also has two sisters, Geraldine Taylor and Charlene Jones and many much loved loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Sallie McFarland, three brothers, and four sisters.
Services celebrating his life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, in the First Baptist Church of Tucumcari, NM. The family suggests for those who wish, donations may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church of Tucumcari, NM, or to the New Mexico Boys Ranch in loving memory of Shine McFarland. Interment will follow in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery.
