Sadie "Mildred" Smart Obituary
Sadie Mildred Smart passed away on June 20, 2016, at the age of 91 years. She was a long time resident of Tucumcari, until she moved to Fort Collins, CO, in early 2011, due to her severe dementia.
Born Sadie Mildred Wells on September 15, 1924, in Miller County, Arkansas, to James B. Wells and Mamie Pearl Young Wells, she grew up in Arkansas, and was known as Mildred. While growing up, she played the guitar and sang in church. As a young woman in Arkansas, she worked in a bomb factory, helping to make bombs during World War II. She moved to Tucumcari, NM in 1945. She met her husband, J. B. Smart, in Tucumcari, and they were married on February 3, 1947. They raised a family of two girls and two boys. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was most important to her! She was an excellent cook and loved cooking for her family. She loved camping with her family, and they had many memorable trips to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. She loved sewing and quilting, and many of her family members now have a quilt that she made. She will be deeply missed and in our hearts forever.
Mildred is survived by two daughters, Nancy Smart Turley of Fort Collins, CO, and Shirley Smart Wisner of Dacula, GA; one son, Dennis Smart of Tucumcari, NM; a sister, Fay Smith of Clovis, NM; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, J. B. Smart; one son, Douglas Smart; her parents; three brothers, Marvin Wells, Neal Wells and Burney Wells; one sister, Rosa Mae Hunter.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 27th at 10:00 am, at Dunn Funeral Chapel, 115 S. 3rd St., Tucumcari, NM. Pallbearers will be all her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Pastors, John Hinze and Tim Hooten will be officiating. Mildred will be laid to rest at Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the service. Dunn Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
