Thelma Fern Hammons Mead


Services: Have been held Thelma Fern Hammons Mead died Feb. 28, 2007, in Coos Bay, Ore, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Mead was born to Jacob Parker Hammons and Bessie Fern Buchanan Hammons on Feb. 13, 1926, in Berryville Ark. She moved with her family to San Jon, N.M. in 1930, attending school there and graduating in 1943. She later attended college at West Texas State College, Canyon. She worked during World War II in the shipyards at Oakland, Calif. She later worked for the Washington State Police in Olympia, Wash., and in Denver, Colo. After becoming an assistant chief clerk for the FBI Office in Phoenix, Ariz., she was promoted to chief clerk in charge of the Portland, Ore., office. She retired after 25 years service with many ommendations. She married Carl Mead in 1966, and they spent much of their time enjoying the beautiful Oregon coast, boating, fishing and traveling extensively. Mrs. Mead was a caring, loving, gracious lady, a selfless giver, and the height of her enjoyment in life was sharing abundantly with family and friends, her family said. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Orley, Troy, Owen and Crosby, a step mother, Roxie, and a nephew, Ron Hammons. Mrs. Mead is survived by her husband of 40 years; an adopted son Gene (Shantel) Mead, a sister, Flo (Thurman) Richardson of Panhandle, Tex.; a brother, Don (Vera) Hammons of Lamar, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Helen (Seth) Caldwell of Florence, Ore. Also surviving are nephews Larry Hammons, Kenneth Hammons, Geneva Gray, Joel, Gary, Keith, and Jamie Richardson, Cherie Chechourka,T. D. Hammons, Tamara Reinhardt, Talara Coen and their families; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, including Carl Oman and family of Ridgefield, Wash.
