Travis N. Nelson (nee Hughs) passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2010. She was born on July 16, 1919, to Sidney and Ernestine Embree Hughs and was raised in Nara Visa, NM, along with her sister and three brothers. She attended ENMU for two years and received her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics from NMSU. She began her teaching career in Floyd, NM, and later went on to become very active in 4-H.
In 1952, Travis married Jack Nelson of Illinois. She gained an instant family with Jack's three young sons, Richard, Norman and Thomas. She spent the next 15 years enjoying her new life in Illinois where she kept busy raising 3 boys, teaching special education, participating on local school boards and meetings and making many lifelong friends. Travis received her Master's degree in special education the same year her husband retired and they returned to the town she loved so dearly, Nara Visa, NM. Travis taught special education in Tucumcari, became an extension agent for Quay County, and expanded her interest to include real estate and property management. She also served as Quay County's first female commissioner, was very active in the Nara Visa Garden Club and flower judging.
Travis never lost her desire to learn. She continued to take classes well into her 80s. She had a wonderful zest for life and made friends wherever she went. She made a difference in every life she touched.
She is survived by her three sons Richard of Phoenix, AZ, Norm (Sue) of Lake Zurich, IL, and Tom of Garden Ridge, TX; her two grandsons, Erik (Jolie) and Adam (Sara) of Colorado and her great-granddaughter Kendal. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews whom she loved dearly, and her sisters-in-law, Joan and Linnea.
Travis was preceded in death by her parents, Sid and Ernestine Hughs; her husband, Jack, and her siblings, Joe (Rose), S.E., Gerard (Mary), and Ernestine Hughs.
A reception at noon and memorial service at 2:00 p.m. CDT will be held at the Nara Visa Community Center on Saturday, April 10, 2010.
