Our dear Mike joined his Lord and Savior in Heaven on October 4, 2013. He was born September 28, 1955, in Escondido, CA, suffering extreme brain damage at birth. We were told at birth that Mike would never walk, talk or be able to care for himself and it was suggested that we put him in a State Hospital. But Mike was strong and with God's blessings, Mike did walk and talk and eventually lived alone in his own apartment for 20 years, doing daily tasks with a little help from others.|
Mike attended Mt. View School and later Unyeway, a school and program to train adults for work in the community. He worked in the nursery in Ramona and later attended their program in Lakeside doing several other tasks.
Mike had a fun-filled life participating in Special Olympics and Boy Scouts, where he didn't miss a meeting for 10 years. He loved his Saturday bowling trips to bowl with his many friends from Michael's House and other friends. He also went to many parties at Michael's House. He looked forward to summer camp at Camp-A-Lot by ARC. He made many trips to Disneyland, San Diego Zoo and attractions with family and friends.
Mike is survived by his mother, Betty Richardson; sister, Susan Richardson; extended family members, Lisa Oertling and Lennie Baker; and many cousins and very dear friends.
Mike was baptized in Long Beach and was confirmed by Pastor Mitchell at the Ramona Lutheran church. He dearly loved his church.
A memorial service was held at Ramona Lutheran Church on October 9, 2013.
Gifts in Mike's memory may be made to the following: RLS Christian Day School, 520 16th Street, Ramona, CA; Unyeway, 2330 Main St., Ste. E, Ramona; or to Cancer Research.
