Charles Francis Heald Obituary
Charlie Heald died peacefully in Poway, California, on February 9, 2013. He was born on the family farm near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on February 20, 1912, to Charles and Agnes Heald. He spent his early years on the farm surrounded by the large Quaker community. After his uncle Franklin Heald and two other men founded the town of Lake Elsinore, the family set out by train for California in 1918. Charlie remembered seeing his first electric light when he stayed in a hotel. The family settled in Lake Elsinore, first living in town and then in 1921 purchasing 82 acres of land in Wildomar.
Charlie graduated from Elsinore High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Wildomar to farm the family land, raising turkeys, planting wheat and cultivating oranges. He also worked as a landscaper and on several horse ranches. In 1970 Charlie moved to Escondido where he was a custodian at Rose School. In 2003, at age 90, he came to live with his niece Diane and her family in Poway. A stroke in 2009 led to his stay at Villa Pomerado where he passed away.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Alice Poirer, and cousin, Rita Domde. Charles is survived by his niece, Diane, and her husband, Dennis, and his great-nieces, Jessica and Allison. Charlie Frank will be remembered for his humor, gentle spirit and kindness. He was a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care Charlie received from the staff at Villa Pomerado as well as the love and support from his family and friends.
The Neptune Society is handling arrangements and his ashes will be scattered at sea. To honor Charlie's wishes there will be no service. Just remember him and pass on a smile or a joke.
