Gerald Fossum Obituary
He was born Dec. 12, 1926 to Julius and Ida (Skaare) Fossum in Pierpont. He grew up in the Pierpont area graduating from Pierpont High School in 1944. Following the death of his father, he remained on the farm until entering the U.S. Army on Oct. 20, 1950. He was honorably discharged July 19, 1952.
Gerald graduated with a Business Degree from South Dakota State University. On June 10, 1961 he married Vivian Wiedenmeyer in Sioux Falls. They remained in Sioux Falls until moving to Huron in 1964 where he worked for and retired from the Farmer's Home Administration.
While living in Huron he was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and former President of the Lion's Club.
In 1990 Gerald and Vivian moved to Rapid City where he was active at the South Canyon Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Fossum, Rapid City; two sons, Drew (Sandra) Fossum, Omaha, Neb., and Reed (Lana) Fossum, Spearfish; five grandchildren; his brother, Erwin Fossum, Fargo, N.D.; and his sister, Hazel Badgley, Mobridge.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivan and Earl; and his sister, Marilyn Edman.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday May 23, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Interment, with full military honors will follow at 1 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Rapid City Regional Hospice House and the South Canyon Lutheran Church.
