Penny Jean Bristol

GOLDEN, COLO. | Penny Jean Goeringer Bristol, 43, went home to her Lord Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. She passed away at home surrounded by her family after a courageous 14-year battle with cancer.

Penny was born May 12, 1969, in Deadwood, SD, to Bill and Val (McDermott) Goeringer of Newell, SD. She was raised in Newell and was active academically and socially in the school she loved. Penny graduated valedictorian of her class in 1987. Penny was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Newell, was active in the youth group, and her beloved Placerville Church Camp where she made lifelong friends.

Penny went on to earn a Chemical Engineering Degree from SD School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, in 1992. She worked for Halliburton Oil Well Services, Farmington, NM, where she met her future husband, Scott "Woody" Bristol. Halliburton transferred her to Denver in 1995. Penny also worked for HACH, Loveland, CO, and IONICS, Boulder, CO, before becoming ill with cancer. Penny was also very active in volunteering with her daughter's school and fundraising for the American Cancer Society.

Penny Goeringer married Scott Bristol on August 23, 1997, at Placerville Church Camp, Rapid City. They made their first home in Thornton, CO. Logan Elizabeth was born to this union on Nov. 17, 1998. In 2001, the family moved to their present home in Golden.

During her long struggle with cancer, Penny was proud to have participated in several cancer treatment trials that resulted in FDA approval and have went on to help numerous people afflicted with this disease.

Penny is survived by her husband, Scott; daughter, Logan Elizabeth; siblings, Peggy (Andrew) Colfelt, Boulder, Patt Goeringer, Chattanooga, TN, and Pete (Kelle) Goeringer, Truman, MN; her parents, Bill and Val Goeringer, Rapid City/Gold Canyon, AZ; maternal grandparents, Tom and Betty (Heston) McDermott, Sturgis, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by a group of close and very dear friends.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, O.V. and Hattie Mae Goeringer.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Faith Lutheran Church in Golden. There will be a private family burial service at Golden Cemetery on a later date.
