Henry Hollenbeck Obituary

Henry "Bud" Hollenbeck

EDGEMONT | Henry Clay "Bud" Hollenbeck died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the VA Hospice in Hot Springs.

Bud was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Glenham, SD. He was the second child of eight born to Clay and Dorothy (Brown) Hollenbeck. He attended eight years of school at the Landeau school and then went on to graduate from Glenham High School in 1947. After serving four years as a mechanic for the Navy Air Force, Bud returned to Mobridge and married Mary Catherine Leary on Oct. 26, 1956. They started their life together at Trail City and later moved to the banks of the Missouri River in the Gettysburg/Dodge Draw area on the Triple U Ranch. It was here that their first four children were born: Patrick Henry, Michael Clay, Mark John, and Linda Beth. In 1962, when the Oahe Dam was built and their home was flooded, Bud moved his family to the Black Hills. Two more children joined the family, Ann Marie and William Robert. In 1968 Bud and Mary bought the Hawthorn Ranch in Dewey and put the finishing touch on the family with the birth of David Bart. It would be here, at the Bridle Bit Ranch, that Bud instilled in his children a life-long love of ranching and the outdoors.

Bud rodeoed with the great Casey Tibbs; he was an accomplished thoroughbred and quarterhorse owner/breeder of state champion horses. He enjoyed competing in poker tournaments from Deadwood to Las Vegas. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching college football with his sons and daughters...and was known to place an occasional wager. He was one of the most loyal St. Thomas More sports fans. He was a member of the Elk Mountain School District Board of Education, the American Legion, and South Dakota Stock Growers Association.

Blessed to have shared in his life is his wife of 56 years, Mary; and his seven children, 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Pat and Tammy of Dewey, and sons Mike, Luke and Jake; Mike and Eva Jo of Billings, MT, and sons Henry, Zane, and Charlie; Mark and Suzanne of rural Edgemont, and children Elli, Hunter, Mackenzie, and Hadley; Linda and Louie Tidball of Edgemont, and children Chris (Michelle), Abigail, and Elizabeth; Annie and Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre, and children Brice and Mary; Bill and Terri of Wamego, KS, and children Nate (Ashley), Jake (Nikki), Jessica, and Katelyn; and David and Denise of Rapid City and children Connor, Caleb, Caden, and baby. Bud is survived by his brothers and sister, Edith Sutfin, Tucson, AZ; L.E. "Pink" (Edwina), Promise; Dale (Helen), McClusky, ND; Robert (Ruby), Trail City; Gordon, Pierre; and Don (Mary), Trail City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Dorothy; his infant twins, Mary Frances and Joseph William; his brother, Vic; sisters-in-law; Nancy and Nellie, and brother-in-law, Ben Sutfin.

Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the church with Fr. Mike Mulloy officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Dewey Clubhouse Renovation Fund, PO Box 739, Edgemont, SD 57735.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences may be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.

God's gift of time...We all need a time to grieve-quite time for reflection and come to grips with what has happened. We all need time for tears, not for the one who is now at peace in heaven, but for ourselves as we realize that things will never be the same. We all need a time to just "be," when we can open ourselves to God and let the reassurance of His everlasting love start to heal our broken hearts. Praying for you and wishing you all peace...
