Milton A. Johnson
BELLE FOURCHE | Milton A. Johnson, 92, of Belle Fourche and formerly of Gettysburg, SD, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Center in Belle Fourche.
He was born January 3, 1920, on a farm at Lebanon, SD, to Alvah and Florence (Boulding) Johnson. He attended grade school through the 8th grade at Beach School near Tolstoy, SD. Milton worked at the Civilian Conservations Corps at Fruitdale, SD, from October 1937 to September 1939.
He served in the U.S. Army from February 27, 1942, to October 30, 1945, as a Gun Crewman Medium Artillery #804. He served in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. Milton received decorations of EAMC Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, and Good Conduct Ribbon.
He married Freida Jacober at Pierre, SD, on January 2, 1947. They farmed near Ridgeview, SD, with Freida's father, Jacob Jacober. They then moved to Eagle Butte, SD, and Milton worked for Standard Oil as a bulk fuel oil truck driver. Before returning home to Tolstoy, SD, to farm with his father, Milton was a ranch hand at Ree Heights, SD. Then in the early 1960s Milton was a farm hand for the Paul Nelson family. He later lived and worked at Hwy 212 truck stop near Lebanon, SD. Then in 1966 they moved into Gettysburg, and Milton worked at the Trail Service Gas station until his retirement. Then after retirement years he worked as a ranch hand for Howard Schween until he finally retired to go fishing.
Milton is survived by his three children, Wesley (Paula) Johnson, Rapid City; Greg Johnson Cavour; Michelle (Greg) Feterl, Belle Fourche. Milton enjoyed his eight grandchildren, Cammy (Brent) Sharkey, Rapid City, Kendall Johnson, Rapid City, Amber (Marti) Kroetch, Rapid City, Angela (Scott) Gulbranson, Gillette, WY, Nicholas Weinert, Rapid City, Dustin Johnson, Houston, TX, Nathan Johnson, Cavour, Ashley Johnson, Mitchell; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Joachim, Hot Springs.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Freida Johnson; his parents; a daughter, Sarah Jane; a brother, Keith Johnson and a sister, Ruth Titze.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, at the Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spearfish with the Rev. Gene Bauman officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will follow the service at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
