He was born on August 27th, 1921, in Altoona, Blair County, to the late Jacob H. and Ora M. (Cronister) Yoder, and spent his summers as a youth in the Hegins Valley with his grandparents.
Dr. Yoder was the co-owner of the Roughwood Collection with Dr. William Woys Weaver.
He is predeceased by a sister, Mary (Yoder) Miller.
Dr. Don Yoder was Emeritus Professor of Folklife Studies, Religious Studies, and American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he taught for forty years (1956-1996) and directed sixty PhD dissertations.
Dr. Yoder was responsible for the introduction of the term "Folklife" to its present academic use in the United States, and he helped to found the Center for American Folklife at the Library of Congress.
In 1947, he received his PhD from the University of Chicago in religious studies, and in his early career he taught at Franklin and Marshal College, and later at Muhlenberg College.
In 1949, Dr. Yoder co-founded the Pennsylvania Folklife Center with Dr. Alfred L. Shoemaker and J. William Frey, and together they established the Kutztown Folk Festival in 1950, the first ethnic festival of its kind.
Dr. Yoder has published seventeen books, and countless articles on Pennsylvania Dutch folk culture. He was widely known in Europe and his work was influential to the German composer Hindemith and the writings of H. L. Mencken. He was considered the dean of German-American genealogy.
A self-described "incurable Pennsylvanian," Dr. Yoder devoted his life to the study and cultural preservation of the folkways of his native people, and has inspired new generations in reviving and maintaining the spirit of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
The memorial service will be scheduled at a time to be determined at the Friends Meeting in Haverford, Pennsylvania.

Don Yoder was one of the last of his kind and a true scholar. I met him and Bill through the Library Company of Philadelphia and only later did we realize we were 3rd cousins 2x removed! Your gentle soul will be missed. Prayers to his family.

Dr. Don Yoder was such a dear, sweet, delightfully brilliant man who was an integral part of our Yoder Family and our Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. We were honored to have him both as a keynote speaker at our national reunions in North Carolina and as our tour guide on the fabulous heritage tour to Steffisburg, Switzerland and Germany in which Elaine and her family, Jack, Phyllis, Ted, Bill and I--over 30 of us Yoders--were honored to be included. Also, of great importance to the Yoder Family was Dr. Don's quest to discover at long last "the missing links" among us Conrad Yoders and the Oley and Melchior Yoder lines. How our lives have been enriched by his presence!
We will truly miss him. RIP, dear Cousin.

Don Yoder was a longtime friend of the Palatinate, since his first visit in 1951. I knew him since almost 40 years. He brought many groups from the U.S. to our region. Many times I had been his guest in Devon and he was my guest in in the Palatinate. We always had a lot to discuss about our common fields in history and folklife. I am very sad having lost a very good friend whom I always will remember.

Dr.Yoder was my friend, my mentor and my inspiration for all that I do today as one of his doctoral "children". He touched so many lives in so many ways and his passing is sad but he leaves a legacy that will not be touched for a long time. Rest in peace my friend.

Dr. Don Yoder inspired many people of all walks of life to not only be proud of their Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, but also to join him in continuing the perpetuation of that legacy. May we carry on in like spirit.
