Carol Jean Bick December 10, 1929 - October 30, 2013 Carol Jean Bick (Hermann) of Clearlake, CA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. She was 83. Carol (Na na to her grandchildren) was born on December 10, 1929, in Toledo, OH, the second of 7 children of Theresa and Walter Hermann. She attended Toledo Central Catholic High School, and received her nursing degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Toledo in 1951. Carol and her girlfriends from high school formed the "girls club", which has continued to meet regularly for the past 65 years. While in nursing school, she met James Donald Bick, a cadet at West Point. Carol and Jim were married on December 29, 1951. After a military career that took them to France and military bases in the Southeastern United States, they returned home to Toledo, OH. Carol initially took a sabbatical from her nursing career to care for her 5 children. She later returned to nursing, and worked into her seventies. Carol loved her profession, and excelled in cardiology and oncology nursing. Once their children were grown, Carol and Jim moved to a lake front home in Monroe, MI. Eventually, they retired to Clearlake Oaks, CA. Carol loved gardening, played piano and golf, was a voracious reader, and introduced the family to snow skiing. She was a strong, independent, and courageous woman who served as an excellent role model for her children. She was devoted to her husband, children, and large, extended family. Carol is survived by her husband of 61 years Jim ("Pop pop"), her children Kathleen (Sallah), Joseph, Mary (Realmuto), and Elizabeth (Duncan), 15 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her eldest son David in 2000. A Memorial Mass will be held at Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church in Clearlake, CA at 3:30 pm on December 7, 2013. A second service will be held sometime in July, 2014, in Toledo, OH. Burial will be in Hoy Cemetery in Shunk, OH. Gifts in memory of Carol can be made to the hospice organization of your choice.
