She met Isaac Goertzen at Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis where they both worked at a mission. They were married June 3, 1939 in Sunrise, MN.
They began their life together on a farm in Madrid, NE. They later moved to a farm in Lodgepole, NE. They lived in several towns in Colorado and Nebraska while Ike worked in the oil fields. After an accident which prevented Ike from pursuing that field of work, he finished his education at Colorado State College in Greeley, CO. Irene went to work at an assisted living facility while Ike attended school. She learned she had a talent working with the elderly. After Ike graduated and began teaching they had an opportunity to purchase the Burlington Rest Home In Burlington, CO. Ike taught school and Irene cared for up to 22 elderly folks in the rest home. They owned and operated the rest home for 25 years.
In 1992 they moved to Kelseyville, CA. They enjoyed life in Lake County where they were active members of Grace Evangelical Free Church and hosted a Bible study in their home.
Irene was always ready with a smile for all. She had a great interest in people of all ages and was known for her sweet and gentle ways. She loved the Lord and especially enjoyed church services and monthly "Best Half" get togethers at church. She loved game shows, especially The Price is Right, and word find puzzles. She was mentally sharp to the end. She also loved her large family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Irene was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Isaac "Ike" Goertzen; her sons, David and Alwin Goertzen; and her son-in-law, Paul Christensen.
She is survived by her daughters, Vida Christensen, Delores (Ben) Cummin, Marcella (Arman) Aardal; and her son, Charles (Gloria) Goertzen. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as a large extended family who have become family by choice, especially Terry Keith and her children, Robert and Kimberly. She also leaves behind her church family who has been a special blessing to her.
