Katherine "Kathy" Porovich Katherine Elizabeth Porovich, age 85, passed away December 22, 2013, at Elmcroft Senior Living in Albuquerque, NM. Kathy was born on April 28, 1928, in Bismarck, ND, to Martin and Anna Nagel. She grew up in Hebron, ND, and attended Dickenson State College. At the age of 19, Kathy taught school in Regent, ND, and also in Oregon before moving to San Francisco where she met her husband "Mickey". They were married on November 23, 1951. They made their home in San Jose, CA, until they moved to Merced, CA, with their two young children. Kathy ran her husband's podiatry office. After moving to Santa Cruz, CA, in 1978 to establish a new podiatry practice, Kathy, Mickey, and son, Mike, retired to Clearlake Oaks, CA, where Kathy and her husband served as relief managers at Lake Village Estates. Kathy was involved in civic affairs and the PTA. She enjoyed politics, playing cards, gardening, reading, and playing the piano. A strong and loyal wife and mother, Kathy was a committed advocate for mental health. She was a leader in the local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) affiliate in Clearlake, CA, and received several humanitarian awards for her years of tireless service. She leaves a void in the lives of all who knew and loved her and were touched by her "words of wisdom." Kathy is survived by her son, Michael Porovich, and daughter, Annette (Don) Hicks, all residents of Albuquerque, NM; as well as two granddaughters, Stephanie Hanks and Ashley (Isaac) Banegas; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Connor Hanks; three sisters, Marian Slag, Geraldine Glass and Helen Schneider, all of ND; and one brother, Carl Nagel of CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death in 2010 was her beloved husband, Mickey, of 58 years; two brothers, Michael Nagel and Martin Nagel; as well as her parents. A "Celebration of Life" gathering took place on December 27 at Elmcroft Senior Living in Albuquerque, NM. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery next to her husband.
