Michael Hill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 7 to May 13, 2016.
Michael Owen Hill May 6, 1948 - May 1, 2016 Michael Owen Hill, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away May 1, 2016, in Monahans, TX. He was 67. Mike was born on May 6, 1948, in Lakeport, California, to Glines Owen Hill and Thelma Belle Gavette Hill Voreis. He graduated from Clearlake High School in 1965 and later graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA, where he studied music and land management as well as other environmental sciences. He put his college education on hold when he joined the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, serving from 1967 to 1969 and attaining the rank of sergeant. Seriously wounded in combat operations, he received a Purple Heart for his service. He then returned to Humboldt State and completed his degree in environmental sciences. Mike would go on to a long, productive career with the National Park Service working as a park ranger at a number of places, including Channel Islands, Petrified Forest, Shenandoah, and Biscayne. He later served as a superintendent at Timpanogos Caves, Petersburg National Battlefield and Assateague Island. He then served as the superintendent for Texas Parks and Wildlife Region 1, which is what brought him to Fort Davis, TX. After his daughters graduated from Fort Davis High School, Mike continued to play an active role in the community. He was a member of the Fort Davis United Methodist Church and a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. When budget cuts led to the cancellation of the music program at the middle and high schools, Mike stepped in to serve as a volunteer band director for the past two years. He led the small but dedicated group of students through pep rallies and field shows, sharing with them his love for music and his belief in its value to students. For his dedication to the band Mike was named Fort Davis' 2015 Citizen of the Year. He is survived by his daughters, Morgan and Jamie Hill, and sister, Mary Glinette McMurray. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glines Owen Hill and Thelma Belle Gavette Hill Voreis. A memorial service will be held at the Fort Davis United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 8, at 2 p.m., with a reception following at 3 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to the Fort Davis United Methodist Church or to the Wounded Warrior Project. Mike was a good friend in junior high and high school. We participated in band, football, track and had many classes together. I have fond memories of him as a hard worker, intelligent and kind friend.

It's with great sadness that I just became aware that Mike Hill had passed on. The last time I saw Mike was over 50 years ago, but his character and personality left a lasting impression on me. Ike and Thelma were our neighbors in Finley in the 60's. Mike's sister, Glinette, was like a best friend and we rode our horses together nearly every day. The Hill home was like a second home to me. I have such fond memories of Mike, just a couple of years older than us. He was friendly, mature and hard working, always doing something around the house to help his dad maintain the orchards on the property. He was always there to help when anyone needed anything. It's with great sadness that I learn Mike passed on at such an early age.

My deepest condolences go out to Glinette and to all of Mike's loved ones. He was truly a very special person.

Mike was the ranger on San Miguel Island during my seasonal posting in the Fall of 1979.
He was an extraordinary person; intelligent, artistic, engaging, courageous, highly skilled at his work, generous with his vast knowledge and always encouraging.

Mike was a person with great integrity who held high personal standards and deep convictions and who also welcomed dialogue with those holding different views. A strong man. A kind man.

I am fortunate to have known Mike and to have had him as a mentor.
His gifts have stayed with me these many years.
I'm a better person for having known you, Mike.

To the family of Michael Owen Hill,
Michael's father and my father were brothers. I am the oldest child of Edgar Paul Hill. I have many happy memories as young child of spending time at the home of his parents Uncle Jiggs and Auntie Thelma. Each time we went over I would ask to try to ride the bicycle because I did not have one. I remember falling down one time. When I kissed the dirt road I ended up having a dirty,
bloody, skinned knee. I was ready to give up when Michael said "Just one more time. I was helped up and I got back on the bicycle and I succeeded in riding it for the first time. I still have my victory scars to this day.
I also remember how proud the family was when he enlisted in the Marine Corps and how beautifully he played the trumpet. His example of service to our country is one of the reasons I enlisted and served in the US Army from 1972-1974. I am sorry that after my marriage I lost contact with Michael. In reading over his obituary I noticed that he was a superintendent of Mount Timpanogos Caves which is about 45 minutes from where I currently live.
From our family to Michael's family may you treasure the wonderful memories of his life, rejoice in the service to his country as a solder and a National Park Service Ranger, to his contributions to the great State of Texas his service to his community by feeding the hungry through Meals on Wheels. Most of all his service will ring through the trees and the lives of the students that he touched while serving as a volunteer Band Director for the junior high and high school. He truly touched the future when he taught. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
In deepest sympathy Sylvia Hill (Kent) Joyce Hill (Aunt) Lillian Valley, Linda Molloy, and Violet Bent.

Mike touched so many lives including mine. A positive influence in my early days as a Park Ranger and now he will be sorely missed.

A MARINE COMES HOME.

Few, earn the title "United States Marine".
Once earned, they are Marines Forever.

When they die, their Honor clean, they stand before Heavens Gate and see two signs, Eternal Peace and Marines.
Below Marines is a path, the Marine follows the Path to a Quonset Hut, knocks Three Times and enters.
Behind a table stand two Marines, Colonel Lewis B. Puller and Sergeant Major Dan Daly.
The SgtMaj hands the Marine a Quill Pen and Bottle of Red Black Ink, he signs his name to the Duty Roster, after which his Heavenly Robes fade replaced by Standard Marine Corps issue.

The Marine Smiles, does a right face and out the Hatch to the Yellow Footprints to Muster as The USMC Devil Dog Division.

The Marines purpose is clear, to fight the forces of evil for all eternity under the command of the ultimate Commander-In-Chief GOD ALMIGHTY....

"By The Grace Of God,
And A Few Marines,
It's Good To Be Home".

Semper Fi Mike....
