Donnie Lee Smith February 6, 1934 - February 20, 2013 Donnie, son of Ford and Maude Smith, was raised in Holly, MI. He graduated from Holly High School, where he played football and made many lifelong friends. He married Agatha "Aggie" Poye in Holly, in 1955. Drafted into the US Navy in 1956, he served aboard the USS Boston, the world's first guided missile ship, and sailed all over the world. After his service he settled in Southern CA, where his love of cars became his profession. He was a business owner in the San Fernando Valley for many years. He and his wife had two children, David and Kathleen. As a family man he enjoyed the out-of-doors; camping, fishing, and hiking. As a Boy Scout leader he climbed Mt. Whitney and all Southern CA mountain tops. He enjoyed scuba diving and boating and he was a forever Los Angeles Dodgers fan. In 1977 he moved his family to Lake County. He opened Don Smith North Shore Auto Repair in Nice, where he served the community for 30 years. Both his children graduated from Upper Lake High School. He proudly ran the chains for the Saturday Upper Lake football games and served on the Nice Volunteer Fire dept. He happily retired and enjoyed time with his family, and they equally enjoyed his humor and story telling. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Aggie; his sister, Lucille Rodgers (Eugene); his son, David Ford Smith (Joyce); his daughter, Kathleen Engelman (David); and the loves of his life, three grandchildren, Jacob, Alyssa and Andrea Engelman. As stated by his granddaughter, Alyssa, "he was the man who taught us the importance of baseball, and when you go fishing it's the company that mattersnot the amount of fish caught, and above all, family is the most important thing."
