James "Jim" Russell

Obituary Condolences

Honoring the Memory of James "Jim" Russell February 4, 1923- August 26, 2013 James L. Russell, age 90, passed away in Santa Rosa on August 26, 2013. He was born in Lima, Ohio on February 4, 1923, a son of John and Gertrude (Lippincott) Russell. He served his country in the Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1970. He then worked as a real estate broker for 23 years. Jim is survived by his wife, Eldena Hanson-Russell; his children, Dian (Jim) Santoro, Karen (Stan) Mallory, Janet (Rick) Scott, Rene Butterfield, and Shelly Moller; step-children, Laurie (Wayne) Shultis, and Randall (Stacey) Hanson; 16 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Vera Umbaugh and Mary Brown; and a brother, William Russell. Jim was a member of the Arlington Lions Club and served 2 terms as President, and a member of the Middletown Lions Club for 18 years, serving as Chairman on all committees. Jim and wife Eldena attended 12 International Lions Conventions including Birmingham, England. Jim was also an active member of the Clearlake Elks Lodge, having completed all the Knight Chairs, Chaplain and Exalted Ruler 2004/05. He attended numerous Elk functions with great enjoyment. James was also a member of Sons in Retirement, "SIR" Branch 133, a seasoned member of VFW and a 17 year member of the Clear Lake Masonic Lodge #183, F. & A.M. While stationed in Germany and serving his country in the Air Force, he was a Master Mason, originally becoming a Mason in Riverside, CA. He was a music enthusiast; he played the harmonica and tinkered on the piano. James loved the game of golf, playing pool, and rolling dice, trying to collect money from his fellow players. He enjoyed family gatherings, joking with his sons-in-laws and numerous social functions with wife Eldena and their many friends. Jim was a remarkable man with a unique sense of humor. To state that Jim will be missed by everyone who knew him, is an exercise in understatement. If you wake in the night, and you hear laughter just realize that somewhere, just beyond the veil of our reality, Jim has told a joke. In honor of Jim, we will gather together to celebrate his life on Saturday September 28, 2013, at Clear Lake Callayomi Lodge #183, F. & A.M., 7100 S. Center Drive, Clearlake, CA, at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served immediately following the Memorial Service. Arrangements by Daniels Chapel of the Roses (707) 525-3730.
