Edith Perry June 25, 1923 - November 27, 2013 Edith Perry died of natural causes on November 27, 2013. Before moving to Lake County 35 years ago, she lived and raised her children in Monterey, CA. She had a soft spot in her heart for children, and especially for the handicapped. While in Monterey, she worked and retired from driving a school bus for the handicapped children. She built a swimming pool, designed for the handicapped, on her own property and at her own expense, naming it after her mother who also did a lot of volunteer work. She and her husband, Herbert Perry, spent many years bringing their children to Lake County for vacations, camping at various campgrounds around the lake. When she retired from her school bus job, she formed a non-profit organization for the pool and donated it to Monterey City as the "Josephine Kernes Memorial Swimming Pool for the Handicapped". It continues to this day. When they moved to Lake County, she went to work for the Lake County Office of Education as their School Bus Route Coordinator (for handicapped children). At the same time, she had a swimming pool built, again designed for the handicapped, at their new home in Kelseyville, and proceeded to spend all of her free time teaching children to swim. The handicapped were free and others paid a nominal fee if they could afford it. It was free to many. She taught swimming here for over 30 years and it has been said many times, that she must have taught all of the children in Lake County to swim. It even got to where she was teaching children of the children she had taught many years before. Edith was a very devout Christian and devoted her life to God. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Kelseyville until she became too sick to attend. Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Herbert Perry, just last year. Edith is survived by her sister, Gladys (George) of Lancaster; her five children, Edith Kelly and Carolyne Bevan of Kelseyville, Shirley Morrison of Davis, CA, Richard (Lynda) Perry of Dixon, CA, and David (Lynette) Perry of Seaside, CA. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be held for her at the Southern Baptist Church in Kelseyville, on Saturday, December 7, at 2 p.m. Please share your memories by signing the guest book at www.legacy.com.
