Shia, Edward Shukry - North Haven (North Haven Citizen)  
NORTH HAVEN - Edward Shukry Shia, 101, a resident of North Haven for 62 years, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015. He was the husband of the late Martha Freeman Shia. Born in Zahle, Lebanon on Nov. 6, 1913, he was a son of the late Shukry and Hesney Ghazel Shia. He was the beloved father of Marcia H. (Ian) Shia, of Washington, D.C., Nancy L. Shia, also of Washington, D.C., Thomas E. (Corinne) Shia, of Reston, Va., and Steven S. (Margo) Shia, of San Diego, Calif. He is also survived by two sisters, Alice Shia Bundy and Evelyn Shia Riordan, both of Hamden. He was adored ""Jedo"" to his grandchildren, Angharad Davies, Michelle Shia, Rhydwyn Davies, Chi Shia, Jill K. Shia, and Ja-Shukry Shia; step-grandchildren, Alissa and Kristina Buoni; great-grandchildren, Daniela Sevilla-Shia, Chad Agosto, Jr., Shia Grace Borelli, Iris Eleri Malley, Ava and Vincent Flowers; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by siblings, Anna Adams, William S. Shia, Elizabeth Murray, and Jeanette Shia. Edward graduated from Arnold College as Valedictorian in 1951, and received his master's degree from Trinity College in Hartford. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving for five years during World War II. He taught at Eli Whitney School, before working for the State of Connecticut, Department of Education for many years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Center Church on the Green, and had served as a Deacon, and also a member, and Past Master of Corinthian Lodge 103 A. F & A.M. He was a member of the Hillhouse High School state champion basketball team of 1933, he received the 100th pilot license issued in Connecticut, and he enjoyed camping with his family. Funeral service was held on Friday, Jan. 23. Arrangements were through Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Smith, Diane J. - Wallingford (The Record-Journal)  
WALLINGFORD - Diane J. Montalto Smith, 73, of Wallingford passed away peacefully surrounded by her devoted husband Robert and her children on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015. Diane was born March 10, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Anthony Montalto and Dorothy Hastings Montalto. Diane was retired from MidState Medical Hospital where she worked for several years in the E. R. Department. She enjoyed working in her yard and attending her many gardens. Diane took great pride in her home and would tackle any and all projects around the house. Diane and her husband liked to travel and visited many places around the world. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert, who took great care of her with much love and compassion. She is also survived by her daughter Heidi Smith Watts and her husband,, Greg of Meriden; her son, Darren Smith, of Wallingford; her sister, Judy Ruggiero, of Vermont. She also left behind four grandchildren, Kevin Watts, Casey Watts, Amber DiPasquale and Shane Paluszewski. Diane will also be missed by many lifelong friends; and her dogs, Molly and Jasmine who sat with her every day. Diane was predeceased by her son, Robert Smith; and daughter, Gretchen Smith. Funeral services will be conducted in the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11:30 a.m. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Sturken, Frederick Vaugh - Durham (The Record-Journal)  
DURHAM - Frederick Vaughn Sturken, 74, of Durham, beloved husband of Coleen (Pettit) Sturken for 48 years, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, at Middlesex Hospital. Born in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frederick G. and Maurine (Ellinger) Sturken. Fred lived in Durham the past three years prior to living in Haddam. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. He owned and operated Flow Monorail & Conveyor Company in Wallingford for 25 years. Fred was a loving and caring person who was very devoted to his wife and children. Along with his wife, Fred is survived by three daughters, Kristyn (Sturken) Sikorski and her husband, Brian, of Drums, Pa., Kimberly (Sturken) Schulman and her husband, Jason, of West Hartford, and Kandice (Sturken) Callahan and her husband, Jason, of Haddam; a brother, Craig Sturken and his wife, Mary Ann, of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Maurine Rodrigues and her husband, Jim, of Deep River, and Kathleen Harrigan, of Stratford; his grandson, Chace Callahan; along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown. Burial will follow in the State Veterans' Cemetery in Middletown where full military honors will be accorded. Family and friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Doolittle Funeral Home.
