WALLINGFORD - Dorothy A. Edell, of Wallingford, died on Wednesday, July 3, 2014, just shy of her 92nd birthday.
She was born in Wallingford on July 22, 1922, the youngest child of Elizabeth Gralton Edell and Russell Harrison Edell. She graduated from Holy Trinity and Lyman Hall High Schools. Soon after graduation, while employed as a bank teller, she answered the call from Uncle Sam and proudly volunteered to serve in the United States Marines.
Upon discharge from the military she purchased a bucolic parcel of land in Canaan, Conn., bordered by the Blackberry River and the Berkshire Mountains, and founded the Globe Thistle Motel. Small and quaint, the Thistle successfully ran for 21 years.
As the motel business was rapidly changing, Dotty refocused her business savvy and ventured into the kennel profession. She studied kennel concepts and soon was hard at work converting the Globe Thistle into the East Farms Kennel. This new venture brought great joy to her and its immense success spoke to the great satisfaction of her patrons, retiring 25 years later in 1999.
Upon retirement, she relocated to her birthplace, Wallingford. She enjoyed during her lifetime serving as director of the Little Animal Guild of Cornwall, Conn., volunteer work at the Franciscan Life Center, traveling, tennis, golf, and always carpentry. She enjoyed great music, the arts, and was an avid reader, as well as establishing and tending to her "Fern Garden," transplanted from the farm in Canaan to Wallingford. She was a parishioner of the Most Holy Trinity Church and a member of the Wallingford Senior Center.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Edell Carr and Elizabeth Edell Coyle; and her brothers, Fred, John, and Russell Edell. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
At Dottie's request there will be no calling hours. She wished to be remembered as a conduit of warm stories of yesteryear and a joyful love of life. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford, Tuesday, July 8, at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at St. John Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Holy Trinity School, 11 N. Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford, CT 06492; or to the Wallingford Animal Shelter, 5 Pent Rd., Wallingford, CT 06492.www.wallingfordfh.com
