Lawrence Beecher

WALLINGFORD - Lawrence "Larry" Sterling Beecher, 86, of Wallingford, died, Saturday, May 8, 2010. He was the beloved husband of the late Madeline Dyson Beecher.

He was born in Hamden, June 21, 1923, a son of the late Edward and Lula Hayles Beecher, and was a graduate of Boston University and received his master's degree from University of Alabama. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, and had been a teacher at Sleeping Giant Junior High School for many years. Larry coached hockey at Yale University and was a member of Yalesville United Methodist Church. An avid sailor, he was past commander of the New Haven Power Squadron and a member of the Branford Yacht Club.

He is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey H. Beecher, of Wallingford, and David Z. Beecher and his wife, Carrie, of Marlborough, Mass.; his two grandchildren, Maddie and Haley; his two brothers, Walter Beecher and his wife, Marge, of Hamden, and Milton Beecher, of Massachusetts; his brother-in-law, Bill Bossoli, of Hamden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Myrt Bossoli and Vi Polsby; and his brother, Ray Beecher.

A graveside service in Centerville Cemetery, 295 Washington Ave., Hamden will be held Monday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. A memorial service at Yalesville United Methodist Church will be held in late August. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to Yalesville United Methodist Church, 8 New Place St., Yalesville, CT 06492. Arrangements are under the direction of The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville.
