BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Daniel Richard Jakiela Sr., 80, of Bonita Springs, Fla., passed unexpectedly Sunday, April 13, 2014. Formerly of Meriden, Conn., he had been a Bonita resident since 2003. He was born Oct. 20, 1933 in Meriden, the son of the late Stanley and Ethel (née Arnett) Jakiela. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Miller. He was previously employed at SMD Industries in Hamden, and later was a former aid to the mayor and business manager for the City of Meriden. Dan was an active member of the City of Meriden Lions Club and City of Meriden Elks Club. In Bonita Springs Dan was a member of the SWF Bocce League.

Mr. Jakiela is survived by his loving companion, Donna Butterfield; his children, Debra (Daniel) Quagliaro; and Daniel R. (Danielle) Jakiela Jr.; both of Wallingford, Conn.; and Dawn M. Jakiela of Ft. Myers, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Heather, Jason, Shawna, Kristan, Nicole, Danielle, Deanna, and Darin; six great-grandchildren, Mya, Daniel, Addison, Colin, Hanna, and Nathan; and many dear friends in Connecticut and Florida. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances, in 1990; and by his grandson, Daniel R. Jakiela III.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial to be held on Tuesday, April 22, at 10 am at St. Stanislaus Church, 82 Akron Street, Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, on Monday, April 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.
