WALLINGFORD- Dennis Carroll Donovan, of Wallingford, a fine Irishman, succumbed to cancer after a six-year battle on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 26, 1932, in Norwich, the son of Mary Carroll Donovan and Dennis Joseph Donovan. Dennis graduated from the Smith Avenue Elementary School and Norwich Free Academy in Norwich. He graduated from Mitchell College and attended the University of Connecticut. Dennis served in the U.S. Air Force with the 103rd/932nd Squadron in Keflavik, Iceland from 1951 to 1953. Dennis worked for Nabisco for 45 years, starting as a salesman in Westerly, R.I. and advancing to supervisor in West Haven. He transferred to Fireside Food, a division of Nabisco, in New York City. He then returned to Hartford, as a sales representative and then to management of Connecticut sales people for Nabisco. He was fondly known as "the cookie man" for all of his years of work for Nabisco. Dennis was an avid Boston Red Sox baseball and Notre Dame football fan as well as a frequent pool player at the Wallingford Senior Center. He was member of the Knights of Columbus Pinta Council 5, American Legion Shaw-Sinon Post 73, VFW Post 591, the Miner Hills golf course, a life member of the BPOE Elks 1365, and a life member of the Wallingford Rod and Gun Club. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.

Dennis is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Eileen V. Mulcahy. They were married at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Norwich on Aug. 29, 1953. Dennis is also survived by his three children and their spouses, daughter, Denise Donovan Carabetta and her husband, Stephen, of Southington; son, Kevin Donovan and his wife, Elizabeth, of Pittsford, N.Y., and son, Dennis Donovan and his wife, Deborah, of Walnut Creek, Calif. He was very proud of his grandchildren, Eileen and Lauren Carabetta, Brian, Christopher, Matthew, Thomas, and William Donovan. He was predeceased by his sister-in-laws, Annamae Enos, Marguerite Leary; and his brother-in-law, James Mulcahy.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the VA West Haven campus team of doctors and Masonicare Hospice for his outstanding care during his illness.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, , from 9:45 until 11:45 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Church of the resurrection where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 12 p.m. directly at St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492.
