MERIDEN - Edward W. Asplund, 78, husband of Betty (Cirillo) Asplund, died on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Curtis Home after a lengthy battle with ALS.

Born in Waterbury on Dec. 22, 1933, he was the son of George and Etta Dunlop. He had resided in Meriden for most of his life. Mr. Asplund was employed by the IBEW local 90 until his retirement. He was a member of the Washington Park Drum Corp where he won many awards. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 45 and the Meriden Elks Club.
Besides his wife Betty, he is survived by one daughter, Dawn Samsel and her husband, Jay, of South Windsor; two sons, Gary Asplund, of Meriden and David Asplund and his wife, Lydia, of Durham; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Lindsay, David, JT, Michael, Jamie and Jennifer; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry Asplund and his wife, Marion; a sister, Arline Dunlop; sisters-in-law, Lillian Ianuzzi, Ceil Cirillo and Esther Cirillo, and brother-in-law, Paul Cirillo; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Betty Cirillo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Chet Dunlop.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden with the Rev. Dr. Elven Riggles officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
