Evelyn Greenblatt Obituary

NORTH BRANFORD -Evelyn Lipman Greenblatt, 91, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, with family by her side at Evergreen Woods in North Branford.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., raised in Meriden, attending Northwestern University in Illinois, and enjoying early work years in New York City, N.Y., she returned to Connecticut in 1947, to marry Morton H. Greenblatt, who passed away in 2006. They lived and worked in Meriden, and retired to Branford in 1985. In 2005, they moved to Evergreen Woods. In a time when few women worked outside the home, Mrs. Greenblatt worked first as a journalist in New York City and then a social worker in Connecticut. She earned her master of social work at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work in 1967, at the age of 46, while raising three children and working full time. She held several leadership positions in public and private agencies before becoming the Director of the Meriden World War II Memorial Hospital Medical Social Work Department in 1975. During this time she also maintained a clinical social work practice that she continued even beyond retirement. Living life to the fullest, Mrs. Greenblatt enjoyed the theater, opera, art history, Jewish history, and loved serving as a docent with the Yale British Art Center. She was never bored. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah, and a strong Zionist. She was most proud of her title of mom, grandmother, and great "gram gram".

She is survived by three children, daughters in New Haven, Sarah and Ruth Greenblatt; a son, David Greenblatt, in Cambridge, Mass.; three grandchildren, Liela D'Agostino (Tony) daughter of Ruth; Josine Greenblatt living in England; Aaron Greenblatt, of Palo Alto, Calif. children of David; and three great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Andrew and Zachary D'Agostino

Funeral services will be held at Temple B'Nai Abraham, 127 E. Main St., in Meriden on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 12 p.m.. Burial will be in B'Nai Abraham Cemetery. A period of mourning will be held at the home of Liela and Tony D'Agostino on Sunday, Sept.15, from 2 to 7 p.m. and Monday/Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m.; and at Tower One/Tower East at 18 Tower Lane in New Haven on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. I saw your mom professionally way back in the 1970's. She was down to earth, realistic and full of good old fashioned advice! She was great.
