NEW HAVEN - Joseph E. Roche Sr., 89, of Hamden, died May 24, 2013. Beloved husband of Marion (Buckholz) Roche. Loving father of Thomas J. Roche of Waterbury, Barbara J. Oddie (John) of Hamden, Joseph E. Roche Jr. (Lynn) of Hamden, John L. Roche (Maureen) of Wallingford, and Robert P. Roche (Vera) of Cheshire, brother of James Roche of Cromwell. Also survived by his 11 cherished grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a great granddaughter, Kacey Rose Mitchell; brothers, Thomas and Noel Roche; and a stepbrother, John Roche. Joseph was born in West Haven Aug. 2, 1923, son of the late Charles and Ann (Rogan) Roche. He was a graduate of West Haven High School and YMCA Junior College where he received an associate degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Roche proudly served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy. He retired after 41 years from the former SNET. Joe enjoyed gardening, walking, fixing and building things, baking and cooking, horse racing, trips to Saratoga and Cape Cod. His greatest joy was spending time with family and watching his children and grandchildren playing sports. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kacey Rose Foundation, P.O. Box 4412, Wallingford, CT 06492. Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, in care of arrangements.
