MERIDEN - Robert A. Femia, of Meriden, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, surrounded by his loving family after suffering complications of a stroke. The youngest of nine children of John and Carmela(Barbuto) Femia, Bob was a lifelong Meriden resident and educator. He was a man of deep faith and was committed to helping others throughout his personal and professional life. He served as a school teacher, home school coordinator, guidance counselor at Platt and John Barry Schools, assistant principal at Platt High School and Director of the Meriden Public School System's Adult, Continuing and Vocational Education Program. Additionally, he served the Meriden community as a City Councilman and member of numerous civic organizations and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Through his integrity, encouragement, caring and commitment to others, he inspired many to gain self confidence, further their education and to have a lasting impact on the lives of others. Bob was a passionate teacher and mentor to students at all levels, and worked with students in the elementary, middle school, high school and adult education programs.

Bob is survived by his "eternal sweetheart" and wife of 53 years, Jo (Fazzolari). He is also survived by his loving children, Rob and Sheri, Paul and Marie, Kevin and Julie, and Jon and Mehvish. Additionally, he is survived by his five adored and adoring grandchildren, Bobby, Hannah, Nick, Hope and baby Bruce Gabriel. Lastly, he is survived by his sisters, Dolores Schmidt and Ann Brannigan; sisters-in-law, Jean Femia ,Emma Femia, Maryann Fazzolari, Maria Fazzolari; and aunt, Immacolata Luca. Bob is also survived by numerous loving and caring nieces, nephews; cherished godchildren and dear friends. He also leaves many family members from the Luca, Femia, Fazzolari, Rossi, Brannigan, Tedesco and Longo families and loving relatives in Italy, Argentina , Australia and throughout the U.S. Bob's commitment to helping others was revealed in many of his actions: he supported numerous children's charities, offered his home to many during times of crisis, and was even known to play matchmaker on occasion. In his retirement Bob enjoyed surrounding himself with loved ones, especially his five grandchildren. He and Jo enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to visit many countries, including the Holy Land and the Pequot Nation in Mashantucket. Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, Dom, Joe and Tony Femia; brothers-in-law, John and Ralph Fazzolari, Francis Schmidt, John Brannigan, Joe Rossi, Joe Longo and Carmen Tedesco; and his sister–in- law, Geri Femia. Also, he was preceded by the passing of his sisters, Kay Longo, Mary Rossi and Theresa Tedesco.

The Femia family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the caregivers at Midstate Medical Center, Hartford Hospital and the Hartford Hospital Palliative Care Team who provided Bob with loving care and compassion.
