MERIDEN - Owen M. Beach, 88, husband of the late Eleanor (Borst) Beach, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012.

Born in Hartford, on Christmas day 1923, Owen was the son of the late Milton and Eleanor (Root) Beach. Owen grew up in Meriden and graduated from Meriden High School where he was on the baseball, soccer and football teams. He entered the U.S. Navy at the onset of World War II and spent three years in the South Pacific Theater serving on PT boats. After the war he attended Springfield College (Mass) where he played varsity baseball and soccer. He was a member of the 1947 soccer team that won the National Championship. Upon graduation he worked at the Meriden YMCA before becoming a physical education teacher at Meriden High School and then Maloney High School. In those years he coached soccer and also, at various times, swimming, tennis and football. In his later teaching years, he taught science at Jefferson and then Lincoln Middle Schools.

Owen is survived by his son, Jeff Beach, of Meriden; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Otis, of Hanover, Ill.; his granddaughter and her husband, Amanda and Stewart Sill; and great-grandsons, Connor and Hunter Sill, all of Wake Forest, N.C. He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Beach.

A private service for family will be held at a later date. The Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden is in charge of the arrangements.
