MERIDEN - Steven J. Hancharyk, Jr., 64, of 2 Washington Heights, husband of Noreen "Reenie" M. Harvey-Hancharyk, died on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at the Veterans Administration Hospital of West Haven after a brief illness.

Born in Derby, on Oct. 24, 1948, he was the son of Lucille (Slowik) Hancharyk and the late Steven J. Hancharyk, Sr. He had resided in Meriden most of his life. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Derby and then joined the U.S. Naval Submarine Service. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and served with the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1973. He was assigned aboard the USS Hammerhead SSN 663, where he was awarded seven Naval Citations, one Presidential Unit Citation, one Arctic Expeditionary Medal – North Pole 1970 and participated in eighteen under ice surfaces (nine magnetic and nine geographic). Mr. Hancharyk was employed by Canberra Industries, retiring after thirty years. He performed physics research and was an engineer/programmer. He lived in China from 1980 to 1986 where he established a Canberra Service Center in Beijing and throughout China. He was also involved in the design of full count body trailers for safety and detection in Chernobyl and all over the world. He greatly enjoyed being on the pit crew for the Post 45 American Legion Quarter Midget Racing. He enjoyed training his star driver, Brianna who thrived in the sport. He was also an avid traveler and bowled in the ABC Nationals across the country for the last 24 years. He also added Salem, Mass. to his list every Halloween. He adored and worshipped his father whom he worked together to build a home in Shelton. He and his wife adored each other and enjoyed every moment together.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two step-daughters, Tamilyn Harvey Fabian and her husband, Bradley, and their children, Tyler Jin Jae and Ali Fabian, of Korea, and Jocelyn Janel Harvey and her children, Elijah Javier, who is a cadet at the Rocky Hill Fire Department and Brianna Marie Calderon, who plays rugby at UNH; and one step-son, Josiah "Josh" Bartlett Harvey III and his son, Ryan Caleb Harvey.
A celebration of Stevens's life will be held at the American Legion Post 45, 835 Hanover Road, Meriden, at 4 p.m. on Friday,( TODAY). Arrangements are under the direction of the John J.
