WALLINGFORD - Edward Stephen Mushinsky, for more than 63 years the beloved husband of Rita O'Leary Mushinsky, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Masonicare Health Center. Born in Wallingford July 12, 1923, he was the first of seven children of Stephen L. Mushinsky and the former Mary Yencsik.

A member of the Greatest Generation, Ed joined World War II as an army parachutist and served in Europe and North Africa with the 82nd Airborne. He participated in the liberation of Naples and received the Purple Heart from action in the Black Forest. He belonged to the American Legion and the Home Guard and on Memorial Day was a member of the Honor Guard which gave the rifle salutes for town ceremonies at the war memorials.

A graduate of Lyman Hall High School and Southern Connecticut State University, Ed received his master's degree from Virginia State University under a National Science Foundation grant. He taught math and earth science at Robert Earley Middle School and at Moran Middle School. He was a volunteer at the emergency shelter.

Ed was an active member of Most Holy Trinity Church where he served as an altar boy, sang tenor in the choir, worked at the bazaar, and was an early president of the Parish Council.

Besides his wife, Ed is survived by five of their six children: Rep. Mary M. Mushinsky and her husband, Martin Waters; Peter L. Mushinsky, of Hayes, Va.; Ann Mushinsky-Tralles, M.D. and her husband, Paul Tralles, of Morrison, Colo.; Kate M. Mushinsky, of Lakewood, Colo.; and Jane M. Mushinsky and her husband, Eric Kuniholm, of Vista, Calif. Mark S. Mushinsky, Ed's oldest son, died in 2009.

Grandchildren include Martin H. Waters, of New Haven; and Edward W. Waters of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Stephen F. Tralles, Clair E. Tralles, Ian Tralles, and William Tralles of Morrison, Colo. Grandson George Mathew Mushinsky died in 2010 and left a son Luke, of Williamsburg, Va., Ed's only great-grandchild.

Ed also leaves a brother, George, of Wallingford; and a brother, Robert, of Mystic; and three sisters, Mary Grant, widow of Harold; Annemarie Mushinsky; and Elizabeth Mitchell and her husband, Alphonsus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins - including Joan Kish. Ed was predeceased by his sister Rosemary (Mrs. Frank) Wasilewski; and sisters-in-law Shirley Gargaly Mushinsky and Helen Ann Loughlin Mushinsky.

The family patriarch, the late Steve Mushinsky, merchant tailor, who opened his shop in Wallingford in 1908, left his business to Ed and George. Ed did tailoring with his father, and later when he was teaching, worked there part-time with brother George.

The funeral Mass will be held tomorrow (Tuesday, April 1) at Holy Trinity Church at 1 p.m. There are no calling hours. It is suggested that gifts honoring Ed be given to Most Holy Trinity 68 N. Colony St., Wallingford; or the Wallingford Public Library. The family is also most grateful for the exceptional care given Ed by the staff at Masonicare's Ramage 6, and by Masonicare's Hospice staff.
