MERIDEN - Martha A. Szawerda, of Kensington Village in Meriden, passed away peacefully at Apple Rehab-Coccomo on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

Born to Norbert and Valerie Szawerda on Jan. 12, 1926, she was the youngest of a large and loving family of brothers and sisters. Martha retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft after many years of service as an inspector. Her passions in life included her beautiful rose garden, of which she was very proud, and a special love for all God's animals, including her adored cat, Zimba. She was a long-time advocate for animal rights and supported many of their causes.
Her surviving family includes her nephews and nieces, their spouses, and children. Her nieces include Susanne Service, Nancy Bedell, Valerie Donnelly, Barbara Brandt, Christine Nielson, and Kathy Vogel. Her nephews include Daniel, James, and Alan Strunk, Lance, Jerry, Mark, Richard, and Thomas Szawerda, Robert and Gregory Celentano, and Albert, Victoria and John Grzybak.
She was predeceased by four brothers, John, Chester, Herman, and Edward; and four sisters, Anastasia, Harriet, Joan, and Beatrice. She is also predeceased by her nephew, Wayne Celentano; and niece, Linda Saverda.
The family would like to extend their warm thanks to all who showed kindness and care to her and her cat Zimba; Kensington Village, Midstate Medical Center, Coccomo Rehab, Franciscan Homecare, and the VNA HC. Also, appreciation to Dr. Jakubowski and staff for their services over the course of many years.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Wednesday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 5 Sherman Place, Meriden, CT 06451. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St, Meriden, prior to the Mass from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111; or to an animal rights cause of their choice.
