WATERBURY - Mrs. Pura (Nieves) Crespo, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at her home. She was the wife of Santos Crespo, Sr.

Mrs. Crespo was born on Feb. 16, 1939 in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Julian and Georgina (Torres) Nieves. She was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Pura was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

In addition to her husband of 49 years, Santos, Pura is survived by her children, Iris Rivera and her husband, Juan Acevedo, of Meriden, Elsa Claudio, Venera Crespo, William Crespo, Cornelio "Neil" Crespo and his wife, Diane and Abraham Crespo and his wife, Ana, all of Waterbury, Julie Plaza and her husband, Wilfredo, of Wolcott, Aida Luz Trauger and her husband, Lloyd, of Beacon Falls, and Ricky Nelson Crespo and his wife, Julissa, of Thomaston. She also leaves 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. Pura is predeceased by her two sons, Luis Rivera and Santos Crespo, Jr.

The Crespo family would like to extend a special thanks to Richard Silverman, M.D. of Waterbury Pulmonary Associates, Alexander Alvarez, M.D. of Primary Care Associates and VITAS, as well as the staff at the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center for the outstanding and compassionate care shown to Pura and her family.

The funeral will be held on Monday, April 4, at 10:30 a.m., from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Wa-terbury, to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery.
