MERIDEN - James R. Savio, Jr., died on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the Meriden Center.

James was the son of the late Molly (Samele) and James R. Savio, Sr., formally of New Britain. He graduated from the University of Hartford, School of Technology and was employed by United Technologies Research Lab in East Hartford for many years until his retirement. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid gardener; he especially enjoyed growing many types of violets. Jim loved music and cars and was called "Sam" by his oldest friends.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Maria, of Connecticut; his three sons, Edward, of California, Michael, of Colorado, Steven, of Connecticut; five grandchildren, Spencer, Jesse, Jack, Madison and Avary. He also leaves his former wife, Gwen (Zimmitti) Savio; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Frank.

The Savio family would like to thank the staff at the Meriden Center for the wonderful care their Dad received.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, May 4, from 5 until 8 p.m., at the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden. His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 5, at 9:15 a.m., from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be at the convenience of his family. Donations in memory of Mr. Savio may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 109 Goodwill Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.
