WALLINGFORD - Peter Anthony Wasilewski, 60, of High Hill Road, Wallingford, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, after a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Peter was born Sept. 17, 1951, a loving son of Inez Malentacchi Wasilewski, of Wallingford and the late Anthony J. Wasilewski, he was raised on Washington St. in Wallingford where the Wasilewski, Malentacchi and Warren families were neighbors. He was a graduate of Holy Trinity School and Xavier High School. At the age of 16 he began working for his lifelong best friend and mentor, David T. Warren at Thomas E. Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Church Street and completed his degree in mortuary science at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City. He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer and continued his career in funeral service for 45 years. The funeral home expanded to open The Yalesville Funeral Home in 1972 and The Wallingford Funeral Home in 1997, where he and David served countless area families with dignity and compassion. Peter was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church and volunteered for many years at the parish bazaar. He enlisted in the Second Company Governors Foot Guard in 1981 and rose through the ranks to be elected the 63rd Major Commandant in 1999. Peter also was a 36 year active member of the Wallingford Elks Lodge 1365 where he served as a Trustee for five years, on many committees, volunteered at many events, and was elected Officer of the Year in 2007. Affectionately known as "Digger" to many for his remarkable ability to shuck clams, which he perfected working countless functions at Mountainside and other venues over the years. Peter was an avid golfer and a member of the Wallingford Country Club where he achieved a hole in one two years ago. He was a member of several professional organizations including: the National, Connecticut, and New Haven County Funeral Directors Associations. He was also a member of the Centennial Legion, the Polish National Alliance Group 513 and the Libero Pensiero Society.

In addition to his mother Inez, he is survived by his two beloved sons, Peter John Wasilewski, of Wallingford and Charles Anthony Wasilewski, of Meriden; and their mother, Karen Burkhardt Wasilewski, also of Meriden; his sisters, Tonia Wasilewski Mansolf and Anne Wasilewski Nations, both of Wallingford; his brothers, William Wasilewski and his wife, Donna, of Milford, and Richard Wasilewski and his wife, Kim, of Wallingford; his companion, Maureen Rieger, of Wallingford; his aunts, Betty Bukowski, his godmother, Anita Malentacchi and Rosemary Wasilewski, all of Wallingford; Carol Warren MacDonald whom he considered another sister; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

His family would like to thank the Franciscan Homecare for the compassionate care they provided and all of Peter's friends for the never ending support and love they showed.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 3 until 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 12 p.m. in Most Holy Trinity Church. Family and friends are asked to kindly go directly to church. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers the family asks that gifts be sent in Peter's name to Holy Trinity School, 11 N. Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford, CT or to the Closer to Fre Fund at Smilow Cancer Center, PO Box 7611, New Haven, CT 06519-0611.
