SOUTHINGTON - Floyd "Flip" Swap, 90, of Southington, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Apple Rehab, Farmington Valley.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born in West Newbury, Mass. on November 5, 1922, he was one of five children to the late Merrill Swap and Annie Pearson Swap. He attended local schools, and fulfilling his lifelong passion for airplanes, enlisted as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army. He went on to serve his country as a bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, earning 3 bronze stars for 46 missions over the Ardennes, Germany and Central Europe, and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1961. He met and married the love of his life, Dorothy (Hammer) in 1947, and shared a wonderful 66 years of marriage while raising two devoted sons. An aircraft engine technician, he retired from Pratt & Whitney after more than 30 years in 1985. A true New Englander, he settled in Connecticut after residing along most of the East Coast during his working years. Flip had a love for gardening, soaking up the sun and supplying his neighborhood, family and friends with his tomatoes and other home grown vegetables. He took great pride in teaching his sons to compete in sports and to repair their cars and especially enjoyed watching his two grandchildren, Sadie and Sam, play on their baseball and softball teams and never missed an opportunity to cheer on the UConn women's basketball team. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he led a full and productive life and will be greatly missed, leaving behind many cherished memories.
In addition to his wife, Dotti, of Southington, he leaves his sons, Peter and his wife, Stephanie, grandchildren Sadie and Sam of Ivoryton, Stephen Swap of Southington, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Brothers Arthur Swap of Great Falls, Mont., Roland Swap of West Newbury, Mass., and Sisters Lorraine Wood of West Newbury, Mass., and Phyllis Soucy of Georgetown, Mass.
Flip's family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Apple Rehab Farmington Valley for the compassionate care shown to him during his time there.
