WALLINGFORD- Phyllis Cooley Varney, 89, of Wallingford, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Masonicare Health Center. She was the beloved wife of the late Merlin F. Varney of 65 years.

She was born in Corinna, Maine, March 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Eugene A. and Hattie Pearl Cooley and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. She retired from Picker Nuclear in Northford and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wallingford where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. Mrs. Varney was a member of the V.F.W. Post 9965 Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicky-Lea Barnes and her husband, Walter, of Wallingford; her daughter-in-law, Diane Varney, of Wallingford; her son-in-law, Jeffrey Smith of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; her seven grandchildren, Donald Anklam, Darren Anklam, David Varney, Christine Whitney, Jayne Sause, William Barnes and Ryan Barnes; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Ronald J. Varney; her daughter, Gloria Jean Smith; and her brother, Archie Cooley.
Her family would like to thank Jane Tomasselli and the round the clock staff at Ramage 3 of Masonicare Health Center for the excellent, kind and compassionate care they provided.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 12 p.m. in the Wallingford First Baptist Church, 114 N. Main St. Her family will receive relatives and friends in the church from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. before the service.
