DEERFIELD - Sophie Mary (Ostrowski) Kahle, 91, formerly of South Deerfield, MA, and Fruitland Park, FL, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the home of her daughter in Deerfield, where she had been living for the past two years.
She was born to the late Anthony and Maryanna (Kulessa) Ostrowski, April 12, 1922, in Sunderland, MA. She attended Deerfield schools before leaving school to work with her parents. She later proudly earned her GED.
She was married to the late Bernard E. Kahle on Oct. 10, 1942, and they lived together in South Deerfield, before relocating to Fruitland Park in 1985.
Sophie worked for many years at Deerfield Plastics in South Deerfield and then became a highly respected cook at UMass, working in the dining hall and later advanced to the main cook at UMass' Campus Catering service. For many years she also ran her own ceramic shop, teaching ceramics to friends and family until she retired in 1985.
Sophie was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Church, South Deerfield, where her father was a founding member, and was a member of the Women's Adoration Society of the Blessed Sacrament. She was a member of the Florida Ladies Auxillary VFW, and the Purple Hat Society of Lakeside Terrace, Fruitland Park.
She had a great love of music, playing both the harmonica and accordion. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing cards and bingo, visiting casinos to play the slot machines, shopping tag sales and thrift stores, and watching Red Sox games. Sophie loved all her friends, both in Massachusetts and in Florida. Above all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sophie's beloved husband, Bernard, predeceased her in 1997. They had been married for 55 years.
Sophie is survived by three sons: Leonard Kahle and his wife Gloria of Plano, TX; Bernard Kahle and his wife Cynthia of Wales, MA; and Daniel Kahle of Northampton, MA, and three daughters: Diane Slauenwhite and her husband Richard of Turners Falls, MA; Maryanna Foster and her husband Richard of Deerfield, and Debra Lloyd and her husband Charles of Morrow, OH. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews including Carol (Ostrowski) Nuite and her husband Frank of Summerfield, FL.
She was predeceased by two brothers: Anthony Ostrowski and his wife Florence of Hinsdale, NH, and Joseph Ostrowski and his wife Anna of Beacon, NY, and two infant sisters: Adele and Kathleen Ostrowski.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Sophie's name to Holy Name of Jesus Church c/o Fr. Randy Calvo, 15 Thayer St., South Deerfield, MA 01373 or VNA & Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, MA 01060.
As were Sophie's wishes, there will be no viewing hours.
All are welcome to attend a Requiem Mass and celebration of her life on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church, South Deerfield, with the Rev. Randolph Calvo officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
