Harrington, Paul K. - MONTAGUE
MONTAGUE - Paul K. Harrington, 63, of Dry Hill Road died on August 10th at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Lynn, MA on December 1, 1951, the son of the late Paul F. and Mary E. (Bette) Harrington. Paul moved with his family to Greenfield in 1962 where he attended Holy Trinity School and Deerfield Academy. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1970. He later returned to school, and in 1987 he earned his Master's in Education from Cambridge College. He received his Juris Doctorate degree, cum laude, from Western New England University School of Law in 1991. While at WNEU, he co-authored an article with Professor Russ VerSteeg that was published in the U.C. Davis Law Review - a notable accomplishment for a third-year law student. He went on to teach graduate courses in law, business, and negotiation at Cambridge College. Paul was a talented singer and began performing at the age of six in a variety of venues in the Greater Boston area and in Western Massachusetts. At age 16, he became the lead singer of a popular local band, the Green Lanterns. In 1976 he became the lead singer for Renegade, a New England touring rock band, the members of which became lifelong friends. Forty years later, his singing would still be a topic of conversation when he visited downtown Greenfield where he would invariably be greeted by someone reminiscing about his performances. Paul never stopped singing. His wife is also a vocalist, and the two sang beautifully together. Paul was a life-long learner, always amazing people with his knowledge of far-ranging subjects. He had a sharp wit, leaving friends and family breathless with laughter at gatherings. He was also a gifted wordsmith and was often called upon to review and edit others' writing. He was particularly attuned to young people and animals, leading him to become ""Uncle,"" not only to the children of those closest to him, but to their dogs as well. He looked forward to his daily trips to the state forest with his beloved rescue dog Lowachin, rarely missing a day over the past eleven years. He also faithfully cared for neighbors' pets, rarely accepting any compensation. He embodied the pay it forward mentality, or, as he put it, ""All that stuff I did, I did for the universe."" When he was recently advised by his doctor to do things ""sooner rather than later,"" he and his long-time partner Michelle Chaikin were married in a joyful ceremony at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. The event was swiftly and lovingly organized by close friends, family, and by the generous and kind caregivers and staff at the hospital. In addition to his wife, Paul leaves his two sisters and their spouses: Mary and John McLellan, of Southington CT, and Patricia and Tom Kennedy of Turners Falls; and four nieces and nephews: Justus and Jessica Merchant, Fred C. Harrington III, and Tracy Harrington Ivey. He also leaves his uncle and aunt, Richard and Joanne Harrington of East Kingston, New Hampshire, and their family, and his very dear friend and former wife Eileen Crosby of Greenfield and her family. He was predeceased by his brother Frederick C. Harrington. In a last act of generosity, Paul made an anatomical gift of his body to Tufts Medical School. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Montague Common Hall, 34 Main St., Montague from 2 to 4 p.m., with a time for remembrances from 2 to 3 and a reception from 3 to 4. For more details: Donations in memory of Paul Harrington may be made to Save A Dog, Inc., 604 Boston Post Rd., Sudbury, MA 01776 or ; or to the Maurice H. Baitler and Rebekah M.
