Romer, Viola Pauline (Lanoue) - SAYRE  
SAYRE, PA - Viola Pauline (Lanoue) Romer, 84, formerly of Plainfield, MA, died Monday, June 27th at Sayre Health Care Center in Sayre, PA. She was born at home in Spruce Corner on February 17, 1932, the daughter of Nelson S. and Etta L. (Streeter) Lanoue. She attended the Spruce Corner Schoolhouse and Sanderson Academy in Ashfield. She was a mail carrier for many years from Plainfield to Adams, and a school bus driver to the Ashfield School. She was a devout Christian and held a weekly women's Bible study in her Plainfield home for over 20 years. Viola was married to Edward M. Romer of Plainfield for 57 years before his death in 2008. She is survived by her daughters; Judy (Bruce) Graves of Sayre, PA, Cindy (Phil) Whitehouse of St. Petersburg, FL, and Patty (Bryan) McGrouty of Prospect Park, PA; her sister, Betty Smith of Plainfield; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Silbert Lanoue and her sisters, Lillian Liebenow, Audrey Lewis and Eleanor Fuller. Calling hours will be held at the Johnson Funeral Home, 104 Bridge Street, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370 on Saturday July 2, from 10 to 11 a.m. A private interment will be held at the Hilltop Cemetery in Plainfield. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Rugg, William Phelps - SANTA FE  
SANTA FE, N.M. - William Phelps Rugg died June 5, 2016. Born in Greenfield on Feb. 23, 1927 to Clarence and Dorothy Phelps Rugg, Bill and his wife moved to Santa Fe, NM in July 1991 following his retirement. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara (Johnson) Rugg and children Elizabeth (Donald) Grybko of Greenfield; Virginia (Carl) Ackermann of St. Augustin, Germany; Satto Richard Rugg (Meera Reid) and Kenneth Rugg (Eliza Packard) of Santa Fe; a sister, Dorothy Fitch of Amherst, as well as six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Allen and Robert. Following service in the US Navy during WWII, Bill graduated with a BA degree in music from Yale University. He served as organist for churches in VT and western MA, including 30 years at Second Congregational Church, Greenfield. In Santa Fe he has been 1st Presbyterian Church choir accompanist, has substituted and given recitals at several area churches as well as at his former home in Eldorado. He was a board member of the Pioneer Valley Symphony, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Santa Fe Women's Ensemble. After college, Bill was employed by Rugg Manufacturing co., founded by his great-grandfather in 1842. The company was known as a producer of lawn and garden tools, including Bill's much-imitated invention, the Back-Saver snow shovel. He retired in 1991 as president and chairman of the board. Bill enjoyed skiing, tennis (sometimes both in the same day!), camping and travel. When their children were young, the Ruggs camped in Maine, NH, Vermont, and across the northern US as far as the Rocky Mountains. Later travels took them to both coasts of the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico and many countries in Europe, including open study tours in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Scandinavia. Memorial services will be held this month in Santa Fe and in Greenfield at a later date, with internment in the family plot at Locust Hill Cemetery, Montague.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Sally Adams Ryder, 67, died June 20, 2016. Calling hours at the Higgins O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol, will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday. Rhood, Frederick G. - Shelburne Falls  
Frederick G. Rhood, 87, of 31C Highland Village, Shelburne Falls, died Tuesday, June 21, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. He was born in Conway, November 12, 1928, the son of George and Helen (Warger) Rhood. He was a Korean War US Army veteran. He and his wife the late Jean McMillen owned and operated Fred & Jean's Restaurant in Conway from 1968 until the later '90s. Prior to the restaurant he was employed by the former Oxford Pickle Co. in South Deerfield as a truck driver. Rhood was a member of the Shelburne Falls VFW Post 8503. His wife predeceased him on June 11, 1996. Survivors include his daughter Sandy L. Clark of Buckland; his stepson Jeffrey Parent of Rowe; his stepdaughter Denise Sallee of Greenfield; 1 sister Winifred Callahan of Greenfield; 3 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. There are no services. It is suggested donations be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Greenfield, Ma 01301. Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls/Greenfield is in charge of arrangements.
