Scott, Russell H. - BUCKLAND  
Buckland - Russell H. Scott, 84, of Buckland, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Friday (7/24/15) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. Scott was born in Greenfield MA March 14, 1931 to Linwood "Redney" Scott and Winifred (Willis) Scott. He was a lifelong resident of Buckland. Scott graduated from Sanderson Academy in 1950 and entered the Navy two days later. Following his honorable discharge in 1954, Scott worked briefly for CW Ward of Ashfield. In 1967 he was hired by the Town of Buckland as the Landfill Superintendent, serving the town until his retirement in 1993. He married the former Eilene Cain on June 17, 1960. In the 1970's the town of Buckland was without its own fire department. Scott stepped up and pushed for the establishment of an upper Buckland fire district, becoming a founding member and the first chief; a position he held until his retirement in 2011. Scott was dedicated to the fire department and to his town, going out at all hours of the day and night, whenever the "red phone" rang to signal a neighbor in need. He was instrumental in implementing a 911 system in town. He was also an avid square dancer, a member of the Ashfield Rod and Gun club, the Catamount Sportsman's Camping Club and the Yankee Doodle Good Sam's. He was a past president of the Franklin County Fire Chiefs Assoc. and Western Mass Forest Warden's Assoc. Scott is survived by his wife, Eilene; daughters Tina and her husband Bill Burnett of Conway, and Susan McDonald of Buckland and former husband Kyle McDonald; his son Christopher and his wife Susan of Richmond NH; three grandchildren, Colleen Walker, Caitlin Burnett and Connor Scott; sister-in-law Barbara Scott of Buckland and several nieces and nephews and their children. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers James and Norman. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the Mary Lyon Church, Upper St. Buckland MA. Scrivens, Betty R. (Brown) - Rowe  
ROWE - Betty R. (Brown) Scrivens, 90 of Rowe, MA died on Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Buckley Health Care center in Greenfield, MA. She was born in Rowe, MA on December 2, 1924, a daughter to the late Edwin and Katie (Reed) Brown. Betty was born and raised in Rowe and attended schools there. She graduated from the Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, MA. After her marriage to Frederick C. Scrivens on November 10, 1942 she and her husband moved to North Adams. She was employed at Sprague Electric Company during WWII. In 1948 she moved back to Rowe to raise her family. She worked as head waitress at the former Rainbow Hill Inn. She was a member of the Rowe Community church where she was an active member of its Ladies Guild. She loved taking cruises and vacationing in Maine. Mr. Scrivens died in April of 1992. Survivors include her two sons, William Scrivens and his wife, Linda of North Adams and David Scrivens of Rowe. She also leaves four grandchildren, Theresa, Billy, Elizabeth and Michael, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren as well as a brother, Stanley Brown of Arizona. She was predeceased by a daughter, Faith, who died at birth; a grandson, Robert; brothers, Everett, Robert, Deane, and Roger Brown as well as a sister, Christine Gorczakoski. FUNERAL NOTICE: Per Betty's request there are no services or calling hours. A private burial, at the convenience of the family, will be held in the West Rowe Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Dakin Humane Society, 163 Montague Road, Leverett, MA 01054. Flynn and Dagnoli Funeral Home, 74 Marshall Street, North Adams, MA is in charge of arrangements.
