Born in Baltimore, MD on November 29th, 1943, Daniel was the first born of parents Russell A. Holmes and Margaret E. (Rowles) Holmes. His fondest childhood memories were of the years spent growing up in Bernardston. First on Dyer's Farm and then on River Street. While in Bernardston, Dan attended the Powers Institute, Mount Hermon School for Boys and Pioneer Valley Regional High School.
