Betty Doreen (Orpen) Begg

GREENFIELD - Betty Doreen Begg, 89, of Greenfield, passed away at Charlene Manor on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012.
Betty Begg (nee Orpen) was born on Sept. 23, 1923 in the channel village of Exmouth, England. Daughter of Joseph and Jessie (Williams) Orpen, she grew up in the home of a "butter and eggs" man with two sisters and a brother in an idyllic seaside setting. She attended Devon County Schools and was high school Devon County 50-yard dash champion in 1939. After graduation, she joined the British naval WREN's at the outbreak of WWII.
It was at a dance just before the Normandy invasion that she met her husband, Lt. Robert Burns Begg of Greenfield. Their dance-floor love was mutual and lasting in spite of his awkward dance steps.
Betty was fearless, kind, and always her own person; a perfect role model. She retired with her husband to the Greenfield area in 1968 and they lived throughout Franklin County with their family in Greenfield, Montague Center, Lake Pleasant and Ashfield. Betty also lived in Shelburne Falls and at the Church Street Home and Charlene Manor in Greenfield.
Betty worked as a nurse's aide at Labelle's Nursing Home in Shelburne Falls.
Betty's interests included showing her dogs and helping animals in need.
She is survived by her sons, Robert of Indiana, PA, David of South Padre Island, TX and Jonathan of Halifax, VT; her grandchildren, Liberty Jack of Chicago, IL, and Braden Begg of Burlington, VT.
A private service will be held by the family.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your local animal shelter.
