Richmond, VA - David Blassberg, 96, formerly of Shelburne Falls and Greenfield, passed away Thursday March 6, 2014 at the Henrico Doctor's Hospital in Richmond. He was predeceased by his wife Nettie Rosenthal in 1977.
David was born in Shelburne Falls on April 16, 1917 the son of Jacob M. and Leah (Morris) Blassberg. He was a graduate of the Arms Academy Class of 1935 and a Post-Graduate of Hebron Academy.
He owned Blassberg's Toy and Hardware Store for many years, worked for his father in the Shelburne Falls Garage, but most recently he was the manager of the Trailblazer Snack Bar on Main Street in Greenfield.
David was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Shelburne Falls for over 50 years and a long time member of Temple Israel in Greenfield as well.
He enjoyed ballroom and square-dancing. He was a member of the Trail Town Twirlers and would frequently visit the Senior Centers in Greenfield, Shelburne and Bernardston to play his keyboard for them. After moving to Virginia, he continued to play his keyboard for Beth Sholom home in Virginia Beach and St. Mary's Woods in Richmond. One of his great pleasures was handing out wintergreen mints to everyone he met.
David leaves behind his daughter, Wendy Blassberg Reardon (Robert) and grandsons Robert III and Stephen of Richmond, VA, and his son Wayne (Jean) Blassberg and his granddaughters, Erin, Alysha (Dan), and Kelleye and a great grandson Ayden, all of New Boston, NH.
A funeral service will take place Tuesday, March 11 at 11:30 at Temple Israel, 27 Pierce St., Greenfield with burial services to follow in Temple Israel Cemetery.
