Donald L. Grogan(1914-2012)

GREENFIELD - Donald L. Grogan, 98, of 32 Park Ave., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, surrounded by his beloved family.
A native of Turners Falls, he was born on Nov. 15, 1914 to Alphonse (Ducharme) and Joseph Grogan. He attended Montague Public Schools, graduated from Turners Falls High School and attended St. Michael's College in Burlington, VT.
He married the love of his life, Catherine "Kitty" Daly, on Feb. 18, 1939.
He served honorably during WWII in the USMC in the Pacific Theater of conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Upon his return from military service, he joined the Greenfield Police Department, where he had a 32-year career, retiring as Chief of Police in 1974.
About two years prior to his retirement, Don and Kitty took up golf which became their shared passion during the 20 wonderful years that they spent together in retirement, prior to Kitty's passing in 1994. They enjoyed traveling cross-country, going to Arizona and finally to Ocala, FL, to enjoy the company of friends and of course, golf.
Don and Kitty golfed at the Thomas Memorial Country Club in Turners Falls for a number of years, where Don won the Men's Club Championship in 1985 and 1986. During their later years, they enjoyed playing golf at the Meadow's Golf Course in Greenfield. Don continued to play golf with his children after Kitty's passing and played about twice a week this year at the Northfield Golf Course in Northfield.
During his working years, he was very active in the Greenfield Lions Club.
Don was a devout communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield, MA. He leaves among his loving survivors his children: Noreen Grogan (with whom he made his home), Kathy of Greenfield, Meg Palmeri of Shelburne Falls, Tim and his wife Joanne of Greenfield, Pat and his wife Claire of North Adams, Kevin and his wife Heather of Kennebunk, ME, and Dan of Longmeadow. Additionally there are 16 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren whom he adored and who will miss him.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; his son, Donald, and his daughter, Mary.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main St., with Msgr. Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, as the celebrant. Rites of committal will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be observed with a detachment of the USMC in attendance, in addition to members of the Greenfield Police Department Honor Guard.
Guests are asked to convene directly at the church in attendance of the formal rites.
Visiting hours will be conducted on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Flowers are respectfully asked to be omitted with expressions of affection in the form of charitable contributions preferred to either the Franklin Area Survival Center, c/o Food Pantry, 96 Fourth St., Turners Falls, MA 01376 or to Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
