WALPOLE, N.H. - Dorothy Jeannette (Henry) Fletcher of Walpole died at her home, following a sudden illness Friday, June 21, 2013. She was 83 years old.
Dorothy was born Dec. 5, 1928 in Keene, N.H., daughter of Charles Henry and Alice (Johnson) Henry.
She was married to married Gordon Henry Fletcher on Oct. 1, 1949 in Walpole, where she remained all her life.
She was a member of the local grange and attended the First Congregational Church for many years.
Dorothy spent much of her life caring for the elderly and graduated from New Hampshire Vocational/Technical College in Claremont, in 1971, as a Licensed Practical Nurse, then went on to earn her Associate's Degree as a Registered Nurse from New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord in 1980. She spent a number of years working at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, and cherished the residents under her care.
She was very proud of her Scottish heritage and was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Society of New Hampshire and Clan Macnachton Association-Worldwide, to which she served as the region commissioner for New England and the Northeast. She had represented Clan Macnachton at the many New England Scottish games and festivals for over 30 years.
She loved sewing and made all of her daughtere_SSRqs' dance costumes during their school years and went on to create Scottish and medieval dolls which she raffled at the Scottish games and festivals. She also sewed and knitted toys and gifts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved animals and adopted many cats and dogs over the years.
She is predeceased by two daughters, Bonnie Dowley of Newfane, Vt., and Linda Callahan of Walpole and her husband Gordon Fletcher.
She is survived by five daughters, Doris Barratt of Walpole, Brenda Fletcher of Walpole, Brenda Lee Hale of Swanton, Vt.; Laurie Mailloux of Thompson, Conn., and Debbie Rodovich of Greenfield, Mass.,and son-in-law William Callahan of Walpole. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jeremy Loveland and his wife Karen of Moneta, Va., Selina Thomas and her husband Wade of Jaffrey, Shawn Barratt and his wife Heather of Salem, Mass., Justina Patrick and her husband Claude of Swanzey, Sabina Conners of Charlestown, Michael Callahan of Concord and Ryanne Callahan of Charlestown, and 11 great-grandchildren, Mathus Barratt of Salem, Mass., Nicholas and Annalese Patrick of Swanzey, Jordon Simmons of Charlestown, Destiny Callahan of Charlestown, Sullivan Barth of Charlestown, Jessica Heath of Northfield, N.H., Andrew Heath of Hudson, Ted and Elliot Mailloux of Thompson, Conn., and Katie Rodovich of Greenfield, Mass.
There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in Walpole Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Dorothy Fletcher to the Monadnock Humane Society.
