MONTAGUE - Helen M. (Momaney) Chagnon, 93, formerly of 170 Montague City Road, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility, 130 Colrain Road, Greenfield, following a period of declining health.
She was born on Dec. 1, 1919 in Brattleboro, VT, to Leon and Emelia (Denault) Momaney and was educated in local public schools.
Helen was a retired supervisor for the Erving Paper Co., having worked there for 35 years.
A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Turners Falls and of the former parishes of St. Anne's and St. Mary's of the Assumption, where she was active in the Catholic Women's Club.
Helen enjoyed spending time with her family, in particular celebrating the many annual holidays. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting and making jigsaw puzzles. She was musically inclined, played the steel guitar and at one time participated with her late sisters: Rita, Anita, Rachel, Jean and Beatrice, in a family ensemble known as the ""Momaney Sisters.""
She was married to Adrian L. Chagnon in 1942 and they celebrated 56 years of marriage together prior to his passing in 1998.
Helen is lovingly remembered by her children: Richard A. Chagnon and his wife Gloria of Chicopee, Ann M. Wilson of Lexington, VA, Mary E. Gaffigan and her husband Thomas of Turners Falls and Robert L. Chagnon and his wife Karen of NH and her 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Additionally she leaves her adoring brothers: Ernest ""Red"" Momaney and his wife Dottie of Turners Falls, George and his wife Helen of San Francisco, CA, and William and his wife Marty of Brentwood, CA, as well as several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She will be remembered by her dear friend and sister-in-law, Delina Barnes, who was devoted to her.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sisters Rita, Anita, Rachel, Jean and Beatrice, and by her brother Leon.
Funeral services will be observed on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 14 Prospect St., Turners Falls, with a dismissal prayer service at 9:15 a.m. to be followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Parish, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, at 10 with the Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, as the celebrant. Rites of committal and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls. A reception will be announced at the conclusion of the funeral services.
A visiting hour will precede the services at the church on Friday with the Chagnon family receiving guests at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the dismissal prayer service.
