CHARLEMONT - J. Gilbert Wilson, Jr., 89, of Mohawk Trail, died peacefully on April 27, 2014.
He was the son of J. Gilbert Wilson, Sr. and Elizabeth (Whelpley) Wilson, born on March 23, 1928 in New York City.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Hazel (Hillman) Wilson, in 2011 and a son-in-law, Brad Bates, Jr.
He is survived by a son, J. Gilbert Wilson III and his wife Mary Kay of Fort Meyers, FL; a daughter, Marilyn Beaupre and her husband Kevin of Sterling, MA, and a daughter, Priscilla Brackett and her husband Christian of Kingston, MA. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Rebecca, Carolyn, Andrea, Rachel, Travis and Sarah, and two step-grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda.
Raised in Stamford, CT, he graduated from the Kings School in 1946. He and his family moved to Heath that same year, where he met his future wife Hazel.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He was wounded in action during the Korean war
and was awarded a Purple Heart
Gil worked for the Town of Charlemont for many years, where he served as Superintendent of Highways until 1983.
Gil and Hazel enjoyed many years of traveling across the United States, spending winters in Florida, and treasured the memories they shared with their grandchildren.
A graveside service for will be held Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls. The Rev. Cara Hochhalter, pastor of the Charlemont Federated Church, will officiate.
