BERNARDSTON - Jannette L. Phelps, 88, formerly of Brattleboro Rd. Bernardston, Ma. died Saturday afternoon (6-15-2013) at Buckley HealthCare Center, Greenfield, Ma.
She was born in Bernardston on August 27, 1924, the daughter of Herman and Lottie (Pratt) Streeter. She was educated in Bernardston Schools and was a 1942 graduate of Powers Institute, where she played basketball on the school team.
She was married on April 8, 1944 to Harvey Phelps in Bernardston, Ma. Mr. Phelps predeceased her in 2011.
She worked at the former Greenfield Tap and Die Corp. during WW II. She was the baker for the Watkins Elementary School in Miami Gardens, Fla. for 10 years. They moved to Bernardston permanently in 1968, where she was a member and Sunday School Teacher at the United Church of Bernardston. She was famous for her Apple Pies, winning first place at the Franklin County Fair many times.
She had worked at Northfield Mount Hermon School in the kitchen, at Foster's Supermarket in Greenfield in the deli, and as a cook at the Family Inn in Greenfield. She served as a Home Health Aid from 1973-1976. For many years, she and Harvey wintered in Florida and summered in Bernardston. She operated her own Old Country Shop in Bernardston from 1978-1987. She then returned to Florida, where she enjoyed retirement, her antiques, flowers, and baking, sewing and spending time with her family. She collected and loved dolls.
In 2006 they returned to Bernardston full time. She volunteered at many area shelters, baking and cooking. She loved going to tag sales, and it was said that she could sell ice cubes to the Eskimos. She was known for her infectious smile.
She is survived by three sons: Harvey L. and his wife Babette of Bernardston, Ma. Jack G. and his wife Christine of Edgewater, Fla. and Michael and his wife Joan of Greenfield, Ma. and her daughter: Annette Johnson and her husband Ken of Bernardston, Ma. One brother: Edwin "Bud" Streeter and his wife Kathy of Bernardston, Ma. and two sisters: Lucy Stevens of Davie, Fla. and Joyce Stote of Swanzey, N.H. Nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sister June Foster.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Bernardston. The Rev. David Neal, Interim Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Bernardston.
Calling hours will be Friday evening (6-21-2013) from 6-8 p.m. at the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave. Northfield, Ma.
