Joseph S. DiStefano(1922 - 2014)

GREENFIELD - Joseph S. DiStefano, 92, of Bernardston Road died Sunday (3-9-14) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.
He was born in East Hampton, CT, on Feb. 28, 1922, the son of Paul and Elvira (Lavine) DiStefano. He was a graduate of Middletown High School.
Joe was a World War II Veteran for the United States Army, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Purple Heart.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but he especially loved horses and going to the races with his son and grandson. Joe owned, bred and raced horses at Foxboro, Plainridge, Saratoga, Yonkers, Hinsdale, Rockingham Park, Green Mountain, Lewiston, Scarborough and many of the fairs around the area. For a period of time, Joe owned the former Greenfield Motors on High Street.
Among his survivors, Joe leaves his son, John A. and his wife Donna of Greenfield; two brothers, Paul DiStefano of Montague and Sam DiStefano of Longmeadow; four grandchildren, Joseph A., Holly, Joseph W. and Cody DiStefano, and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by his wife, Helen L. (Day) DiStefano, on Feb. 7, 2012; a son, Joseph Patrick DiStefano in 2010, and a grandson, Christopher DiStefano.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (3-15-14) at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Saturday from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St.
