GREENFIELD - Karolyn A. Kemp, 92, a resident of 6 Keegan Lane, died at the Buckley HealthCare Center, following a period of declining health, on Feb. 6, 2014.
She was born on July 5, 1921 to Dr. Howard M. and Mary L. (West) Kemp. Karolyn graduated from Bement School, Deerfield, MA; Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School for Young Women, Greenfield, MA, and Lasell Junior College in Newton, MA.
She was employed previously at Town & Country Real Estate as a realtor, as a ""hostess"" at the Church Street Home, for the former Phoenix Home Life Insurance Co. and a personal care assistant to Roger Peck.
Karolyn served during WWII
as a nurse's aid with the American Red Cross at the Farren Memorial Hospital in Turners Falls, MA. She served over 50 years as a volunteer and member and past president of the Junior Branch. Karolyn was a volunteer at the Franklin County Public Hospital, now known as Baystate Franklin Medical Center, which she so enjoyed. She served as a past secretary of the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library and was a lifetime member and communicant of St. James Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild.
As an active and staunch Republican, Karolyn was a member of the Republican Town Committee, the Franklin County Women's Republican Club, the National Republican's Club and the State Republican's Club. She was a member and past president of the Shelburne Falls Women's Club. Karolyn served as a member and trustee of the College Park Association in Greenfield, MA.
An avid golfer, she was a longtime member of the Country Club of Greenfield, where she enjoyed ""happy hour"" at the 19th hole and the company of her many friends. Additionally, she enjoyed reading, politics and horseback riding with her father.
She was predeceased by her parents, as well as by her late husbands: William S. Howe, Jr., Donald D. Hillier, and by her brother, Walter.
Karolyn is lovingly remembered by her children: William S. Howe III, of La Jolla, CA; Derek K. Howe of Greenfield, MA, and Virginia L. Howe of Dublin, NH. Additionally, Karolyn leaves her devoted granddaughter: Sarah A. Schmidt of Burlington, VT
Services in celebration of Karolyn's life will be observed on Sunday, March 2, 2014, with a memorial service at St. James Episcopal Church, Greenfield, MA, with the Rev. Heather Blais, rector, and assisted by the Rev. David Holroyd, former rector of St. James Church, and a friend of the deceased. At Karolyn's request, a jazz ensemble will provide a musical prelude from 1:15 p.m. until the time of the service in the sanctuary of the church. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall.
At Karolyn's request, visiting hours will be omitted.
Following cremation, she will be laid to rest privately in the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, MA.
